Wow. This is VERY VERY pretty. Skilled piece indeed. I really like the idea, the colors, and the composition. One little remark tho; the sky's gradient isn't that smooth, did you have 16-bit colorspace while working on this beautiful thing..?

Like the imagery, don't like that it looks as if you used the layout from another submission tho.

In case you didn't realize it, you've managed to finish your layout far too similar to
http://www.crestock.com/blog/design/contest2007/entry.aspx?id=6001
which was one of the first submissions in this round. If you had managed a different way of presenting to make it look a bit different?

MarcusAurelius didn't invent that layout, it's been used to show details before. In fact it was used quite a bit in last years competition. Really nice entry, going to be hard to top.

Awesome work, the color palete is great!
@juno: that's nothing to give importance in my opinion. After all that piece you show there made the same layout from past year winner, here you can see it:

Jerico is a great artist. Period. I'm in the contest too, and we have to face it, right? About the deviantArt thing, you will be surprised if you search for crestock in dA. Half of the entries are there, and that's OK to request for votes! Because is a COMMUNITY and everyone has FRIENDS so it's TOTALLY OK. After all, and if you guys still can't get over it, there is a jury, so... Stop Complaining.
This is a great contest. Good luck Jerico, and good luck to you all.

By

on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 5:07 AM
Well I don't know about disaster, strong word there john. But to me also it's not as good as it could have been. I mean the concept is good but some of the execution is a bit simple and toon like, would have been more impressive with a slightly more photo-real elements integrated in there.

Muy bueno. Me gusta mucho su composición y el estilo. Se merece ganar.
By
clemens
on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 1:34 PM
Although it is technically sound, the composition doesn't work too well if you remove the detail panels on the right. I can see why the artist added those macro shots, it helps balance the picture. The image suddenly loses its impact without those panels and exposes a compositional imbalance. You really have to look at the image isolated from those panels.
By
composition
on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 3:00 PM
This piece is totally blowminding, amazing work. Ignore these last negative comments, they might be jealous.
Is fun what clemens says about composition since it's really carefully balanced. Probably he never heard about symmetrical compositions, that's sad.
Good luck!

Hi rarz, I would like to wish you good luck and hope you win. I am stepping out of the contest. Good Luck to you...
By
ViniMan
on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 8:43 PM
THis one could be a possible winner, maybe a bit too flat with the guitar but you fix that by getting in some cool elements. Maybe change the bit channel to a higher level it screws the background gradient. Nice work. :)
By
clemens
on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 10:15 PM
Composition condescendingly noted that I may have never heard of symmetrical balance. If you do your research you will note that vertical symmetry is to be avoided and horizontal symmetry is favored. If you use vertical symmetry you add an element to one of the sides = the panels. It isn't trolling, it is a basic observation that you can google for yourself.

The overall composition of this piece is great. You used color very well. The balance in this piece is great. However I feel some things could be better implemented. The "nature" behind the guitar makes you wonder how exactly it is part of the guitar, it gives it almost a flat feeling at first glance, however its a surreal image so it doesn't really matter for the most part. Conceptually this image does not stand out, although it's aesthetically perfect. The idea of floating objects in the sky has been used far to many times. I feel if you took the time to think of a solution before working the overall quality of your pieces would be better. I love your work, I just feel this tends to lack a unique concept. Still compared to other pieces in this competition it's my choice for the winner as it uses superior techniques and great use of the elements as well as a perfect example of your confidence with the medium you are working in.

Come on people, stop trolling over it. Look deeper into the piece. It's more than just another floating city. It's a floating musical world. I love the way the guitar neck finish as a tree, where the fruits are represented by cd's hanging by the branchs, also the bornt of music (clef). As said above, this piece goes from heaven to hell in a really smooth way. To be honest, I think this piece has a really depth meaning and an awesome execution. You have my vote dude!

seriously, as with other entries, we are all spending too much time on these few while other excellent entries are stagnating with 7-8 votes. really good ones. let's make this round a competition and less of a runaway train like the last round. remember, the piece that caused the most controversy won, and i think that's sad (not that it is not a good piece). get out there and vote, otherwise you end up with a bush as your leader.

Interesting niknak that your blind faith in this piece is so much that "You'll eat your hat if it doesn't win" and you stalk a few of the other entries and barrage them with meaningless insults and attacks while you ask friends to vote for this piece, and not look at any of the others! this has become a contest of ass licking and who has more friends online, not about whos piece is best and thats a shame! if i was running this contest id declare it void, what happened to let the best man win, fuck all the shitty begging for votes..pfft.
lots of nice images here but what a lame ass contest this turned out to be. a contest of who can post the most links begging votes. nothing to do with the image.
im not even entered or registered here, so my viewpoint is completely neutral. like i said nice image, but there are other equally as good if not better. its a shame it had to come to this.

in 2008, CS could save itself a huge headache and just leave it to the judges. no public vote. i mean, it does count as 40% of the overall vote, so not sure how one CAN'T solicit votes and expect to win....
I second the getting rid of the voting system
By
time_to_rethink
on Monday, 17 December 2007 6:06 PM
While I do believe this is nice work, I don't believe that the actual votes for all the entries adequately reflect the best art. If this piece wins I will be disappointed. Not because it isn't good but because it's the same old thing. Look at some of the other entries, they are fresh, new, and not the same old thing. Floating trees, guitars, and houses have been done before. Look at all the contests, floating things are in. Isn't it time to start seeing more unique art creations. The african woman, the fly, girl with the photographs, and the fairies are a few of the more creative entries in this contest. I hope the judges take that into consideration and get rid of the popular vote. It's not reflecting the best works and should be abolished.

I think you did a great job and I wish I would have seen this several months ago. I could have sold it to a client. Well done.

Perhaps if you had not posted to other websites for votes, you would only have a few votes like the others not begging for votes.
I hope the judges really look at the work and skill put into this piece when placing their votes and pick the person that deserves to win.
Look at the 10 -25 vote getters

There are some unique and very skillful entries there. The bonsai tree, dante's inferno both come to mind. They are haunting images with much skill displayed. It is more representational of what this contest could aspire to become, and I agree, just leave it to the judges next year.

I really don't think this deserves the votes it has. There appears to be a bit of a political contest going on here and lots of the high scoring entries are not better than those lower.
As for critique, this is a clean execution of the floating island concept, but is nothing original. In the high res version, there appears to be some inconsistency with the way your new material sits with the stock. You've covered it with the cloud thing at the top of the guitar neck, but at the bottom it's a little messy. What res did you work in?
I have a small issue with the dimensioning also. There is really good perspective in the clouds, and with a couple of the small features such as the grass on the knobs and the shadow on the guitar body from the cloud, they sit well. However this 'island' is very flat and 2D. I understand what you were trying, but it feels inconsistent.
Doesn't get my vote.
omg!

You don't need to be very intelligent to realize these negative comments are comming from some afraid children who have submited something to this contest. This is from far my favourite entry.
Good luck mate,
Jamie

weve seen this idea million times before.. even in this contest.. its a good picture, but i think that your DA and myspace friends gave you a hell of a good start. and as one picture have got a lot of votes, the others follow by voting the mainstream one.
im jelous at your votes, everybody who has commented here are jelous at your votes, what people dont see is that everytime a negative comment comes up, people think theyre jelous at the picture. people have got to seperate this..
the pictures nice at first sight, but in the high res, when you see the details, this could actually been one of those whos got 1-5 votes
thats my opinion, love the way youre collecting votes though.
if this works out for you, youre a hell of a smart guy...
peace.

Super Mario Galaxy; when will the novelty wear off?
What ever happened to strong concepts and originality?

As a trend design, this sells and that is why it is getting so many votes.
As anything else, it's lacking in terms of concepts and originality. It's a shame that this is what people are calling award-winning these days.
How many floating island "art pieces" must I view until my eyes burn?
Congrats!
