Photoshop Contest '07 – Round 1 Winner Announcement

Posted Friday, 30 November 2007 in Design, Inspiration, Photoshop
We have been thoroughly impressed by the responses in the first round of our contest. Among the 600 entries, there are literally dozens and dozens of entries that all deserve a prize, but in the end there can only be one ultimate winner. Or rather; in this initial round there are two winners.

1st Place, and winner of the iPod Classic:

2nd Place, and winner of the iPod Nano:

With such a diversity of creative and technically adept entries, it's interesting that two relatively lighthearted and humorous – albeit extremely accomplished – entries, both taking the frog image as their main inspiration, made it all the way to the top. There are sadly many excellent entries that didn't quite make it to the top, so we urge everyone to have another look through all the entries for round 1.

Considering the numerous questions and concerns regarding our voting arrangements, many of you will no doubt be interested to hear that the results for the top entries here were surprisingly consistent and clear-cut. The top three entries would in fact have been unchanged had our results been based on judges votes alone.

My Gratz to the winners of #1.
Corker!

I'm not at all unhappy seeing the winner. I loved it instantly. Question to the artist, "Are you a fan of Michael Sowa?"

Great work, and well done!

To the rest of the top 15, also well done, really good work.

And well done Olie!

Frogzilla triumphs in the end! Congratulations to everybody, fantastic work.

Congrats!

I agree. Those top 4 are really great. Congrats to everyone!
NO WAY!
By glimm on Friday, 30 November 2007 5:39 PM
the second work isn't conforming with rules! Author wrote that he repainted frog...haha good joke. I thought that judges will approach professionally to this round...congratulations to the 1st place!
Blessing!
By Amirali on Friday, 30 November 2007 6:12 PM

of these 15, richness, yours is the best
By Jonathan on Friday, 30 November 2007 9:10 PM
Congrats to the winners! For round1 voting worked pretty ok.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working too well on round 2. None of the entries holding a current top 3 position represents top notch photoshopping, which at least for me kind of takes away the whole point of the competition. It also makes the judges pretty useless if they end up picking from three not so great pictures.
Wow like we didn't see this...
By SilverLeafArtist on Friday, 30 November 2007 10:14 PM
Come on what the hell the one that won is the one with the most votes. This just shows that the 40% has more clout then told. Congrats but in short this says volumes of the poor run contest here period!
@ Johnathan
By Sysica on Friday, 30 November 2007 10:44 PM
I agree. Much of the better works in round two are those with fewer votes. Not that I'm saying mine with it's paltry votes is anything special but I like to think that it's in good company :D

Nice work by everyone in the top 15 in round 1.
By bocek on Friday, 30 November 2007 11:06 PM
Congrats to the winners!
Are you F#$$ing kidding me!
By needforname on Saturday, 1 December 2007 1:29 AM
Poor judging! I honestly can't believe some of these made the top...especially over mine ( i did the bush into a statue). #'s 5,7,8,11 are nothing special at all. Look at the hand at the end of the list...that one should be at the top for sure. Atleast the winning pieces are good. I will probably get booted for speaking my mind. I already posted a comment and crestock deleted it for some reason.
By strudelhouse on Saturday, 1 December 2007 2:41 AM
I completely agree 'needforname'....I'd even add some more to that 'nothing special list'....some of these top 15 did not require a lot of skill

and then there's #4 which looks amazing and did require skill, yet practically didn't even do anything to the source image

i don't care that i didn't win......i just don't understand what these judges are thinking

i had started an entry for round 3, but now i'm thinking what's the point. these judges clearly have a 'unique' taste
re: Strudelhouse
By hienkts on Saturday, 1 December 2007 6:31 AM
Yes, I totally agreed with you! What did they use skill on 1st and 2nd price? Almost they redraw and attached banana into these photo.

I think no. 9, 10, 12 & 15 more inpression than 1st & 2nd price
whiners,

Really inspiring gallery.
well deserved
By stugriffith on Monday, 3 December 2007 3:15 PM
i thought the top two were in the top 5, so glad to see they received such recognition. the others, as well, show just how diverse the world of art really is. congratulations to everyone who took the time to submit to this contest. you all made it a great competition.
@ Glimm
By Crestock on Monday, 3 December 2007 4:32 PM
We certainly expected to see your entry in the top 5, sorry that you didn't make it all the way to the top.

We don't agree, however, that the image in second place doesn't conform with the rules, since it is clearly based on our source images even if they have been radically altered. There are so many different ways to use Photoshop, enabling a broad range of expressive styles from the high-tech look all the way to the hand painted feel of this image.

Without the frogs in the foreground the image would be based predominantly on the smoke and factory chimney image, which is clearly recognisable, as such it would still qualify for the contest.
@ MTrebbin: banana+flood-filter?
By Crestock on Monday, 3 December 2007 4:39 PM
The image you're referring to here was disqualified and removed from the contest due to vote rigging.

We should also add that this was predominantly done to generally interfere with the proceedings of the contest and cause as much anger and frustration as possible among the other contestants. On this second point they did perhaps succeed for a little while.
about the vote
By darkman on Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:18 AM
I seldom, if ever, get involved in these "competitions", Here's the reason why. Votes from the viewers and participants are virtually meaningless. My workplace has 15 workstations from which I could easily vote for whomever I wanted to win ( including myself ) simply by registering a few dozen times and voting. Not to mention my 2 personal machines and various friends that could help out. When the winnings are over 6K as these are, the voting should be protected from fraud and the possibility of any rigging by participants.
As cleaver as the winning image is, as a representative piece of the capabilities of Photoshop, it really is lacking. Not to mention that there is virtually nothing within the image that has any relative meaning. How does the frog, staring out into space, relate to the man on the dock holding a light ? Or to his surroundings ?.... It's just poor art to me
Great competition and fanatastic results.........shame about the bitching
By freejay on Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:35 AM
Congrantulations to the winner and placings.......really great work and to all the people complaining here.........jealousy wont improve your art!
Quit bitching and start chopping!
By supaK on Tuesday, 4 December 2007 7:17 PM
fantastic work guys
By josorio on Wednesday, 5 December 2007 1:52 AM
quienquiera deseé ganar (me incluyendo) simplemente colocando algunos

really neat stuff
its all very creative and imaginative
Ridiculous to argue over art
By Pasta on Sunday, 16 December 2007 4:15 PM
Seems to me that none of these images are all that great, irrespective of the amount of 'skills' required. The beauty in art is in the eye of the beholder, skill has no place if it lacks artistic vision which is why some of the simplest things have been considered artistic masterpieces.

That said the top 15 did require some talent and well done to the winner.

Congrats! Beautiful, what can I say. As a newbie, I can see I'm going to love this site and learn so much. This is a new challenge for me for sure.

Wonderful work
By Guest on Friday, 18 January 2008 6:34 AM
All of these are great...but the two winners really shouldn't have won. Many of the top 15 were more creative, required more skill, and were on the whole more beautiful.
