Linotype FontExplorer X

FontExplorer X is Linotype's easy-to-use, versatile and not least FREE font management application for Mac OS X.

The appliction boasts an impressive set of features which makes it a huge improvement over the built-in FontBook – if you do use a large number of fonts on a regular basis. FontExplorer X really gives you full control and overview of all your fonts and includes optional 'activate on demand' plug-ins for InDesign, Illustrator and QuarkXpress.
Our only reservation would be that there is no 'print font sample' option, and an export function for font samples in PDF or JPG format would have been a welcome addition too.

For long-suffering Windows users, an alternative would be Sue Fisher's freeware application Font Thing. This was created for Windows 98 and has not been updated for a rather long time, but we have been reliably informed that it also works well with Windows XP.

Now on Windows as well

Linotype's released a Windows version of FontExplorer X on Mar-30. It's not for Vista, but it'll work fine with WinXP.

Font Explorer X exports the previews in PDF or JPG. You just select the samples you want in the lower-right part of the screen and drag them into any folder. That works only for the one-line samples and there is no functionality to export the multiline samples, but the basic functionality is very handy.
