greyhound isnt second fastest animal, there are many faster animals like for example antilopes that run over 100 km/h
great shot

what the heck is that funky harness that comes over the head and hooks into the top canines and the bottom lip??
By EcoShow on Wednesday, 6 June 2007 9:58 PM
Javi, all racing dogs have a harness over the head to prevent them from biting each other, especially at the end of the race when they are still very exited and looking for the "hare" that they just chased. It fit over the head and is fastened behind the head and not hooked to either the canines or lips of the dog. It is specially designed not to hurt the dogs. In the photo the mouth of the dog is gaping to allow for maximum breathing during the sprint.

Krim, you are of course correct about some antelopes being faster.

Great work. An excellent combination of speed, expression and timing. I am surprised how you did manage? after seeing the image whenever I am closing my eyes the DEMON appears before me. What a SHOT!

Clarification
By EcoShow on Thursday, 7 June 2007 10:04 PM
Well, my greyhound picture certainly got people talking. Just to clarify some statements that was made in a lenghty discussion elsewhere in this site. As said above all racing dogs have a lightweight harness over the head to prevent them from biting each other. It is specially designed not to hurt the dogs. Its purpose is definitely not to keep their mouths open – why would anyone want to do that? In the photo the mouth of the dog is gaping to allow for maximum breathing during the sprint - he requires masses of oxygen to supply to its muscles. I can assure you there is nothing altered in the image – the harness is of very thin wire and thus not that clearly visible in the small picture. The rules of this competition clearly states that a photographer may be asked to provide the original for verification. That I can do.

I do not necessarily condone dog racing, but I do find it fascinating and very challenging to photograph. My observation thus far was that the majority of dogs enjoy racing. You can see the anticipation on their faces waiting for their turn. At the end of the race their handlers need to catch them or they will go for another round and often they do if they are not caught in time.

When they are not racing these dogs are very docile and friendly. The expression on this particular dogs face is not of aggression – it is simply a result of sheer determination and physical exertion.

Just to put people at ease about possible cruelty to the animal in my photo. Take a look at the greyhound images on the site below. There you can clearly see the harness over the head of each animal. It is a mandatory item in all official dog races the world over and is there for the protection of the dogs and not to harm them in any way. Look at all the dogs while sprinting: their mouth wide open for breathing.

Hard choice to chose from this cute doggie and the pic from the plane with the helmet.
I just take a look and most coments are new users, only 3 or 4 have some images on crestock already.
No idea if from the old users somebody vote this pic, but I stick with it.
No idea about the technical quality in full size, but here looks "real".
I like the determination of the animal to win the race.
Is a bit stupid to vote others when you run the same race, but sometimes you must admit others are better :-)
