How I did this
By cthier on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:25 AM
I have had a lot of people ask how I did this, so I have posted a blog giving tips on taking photos like this here: http://thethiers.com/?p=148. You can also see more photos in the set here if you like: http://flickr.com/photos/thethiers/sets/72157600290432460/.

Thank you for the info about the first round. Light painting is one cool effect, and you've got the doubly-popular subject combining it with a child. Thanks again, and kudos to you and your image!

FABULOUS picture! Great concept; great execution! I love it!
GET REAL!

how can you have 40 plus votes in less than a day (24hrs)?
Perspective
By cthier on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 4:15 AM
@JoSE: It's always good to have a lot of friends :) I think it is why (and for good reason) they count the popular vote 50% and the judges 50%. Notice that the winner of the first competition was somewhere around 20th in the popular vote, and the winner of the popular vote didn't even place. In the end the judges will determine which is best, I just hope they see the work that I put into mine. Good luck to all! It is not going to be an easy decision.
Very Unique - One of a kind!

I love it - as a mother I am always looking to photograph a unique picture with a sense of my own and one I can look back on and bring a unique memory.

I love it - as a mother I am always looking to photograph a unique picture of my little girl with a sense of her own personality and one I can look back on preview a unique and individualized memory!
Come on.

I don't understand how an average photo that doesn't really address the concept of "Speed Demon" can make it so far so fast. People keep the comments relative and please vote for something that addresses the actual theme.
MY OPINION ONLY
By photographer on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:54 AM
a lot of your friends doesn't seem to understand the theme..."SPEED DEMON"its someone or something thats moving extremely fast. But its understandable, they're your friends. But this is a nice image if the theme is "PAINTING WITH LIGHT"
Everyone has their opinion
By cthier on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 5:14 PM
@photographer and sethmcallister: I would like to think that I worked very hard to try to find a creative way to show speed. Quoting the Theme: "In this final round we're looking for photos that convey a real sense of speed – be it a person or object perfectly 'frozen' in mid-air, or long shutter speeds and motion blur used to exhilarating effect. And remember: it does not have to be traffic-trails or falling waterdroplets; originality counts too!" I had hoped to be quite clever about shooting both someone frozen in mid air, and yet using a long shutter speed to get a nice effect. If I have to point that out, then perhaps you haven't looked close enough at my photo. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in the end the judges will decide which is best. How about we all enjoy the competition, and if you would like to criticize, how about some constructive criticism? Thank you to those that did see what I was trying to do, and voted for me, and good luck to all, as there are many fine photos in the contest!
Another one of a kind...

Based on the theme...you have my vote!
By AshleyEvans on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 5:29 PM
Based on the theme, "Speed Demon," I love how you took the theme and based it to something that is relative to your life and your surroundings. You for sure have my vote! Great work!!

as a mom, it gets to me. very surreal. I love it. very cute child, too.
By anon on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 7:12 PM
I'm sorry, but how this falls into the category of speed demon beats me.
By Skyde on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 7:18 PM
Yes! This is it! In vain I have been looking for the demon in this contest and now I've found it. Such an archetype of evil! Really demonic face indeed.

I love it!!!

Well I think when it comes to voting like this, there are many factors that counts. Each person has their own taste, educational level, point of view, private relationship etc.. which determine their vote. So do not feel to bothered and upset if some pictures you think not worthy and it goes to the top and vice verse. Moreover, not all voters are professional and have eyes for photography anyway. So we all hope that the judges will do a justice judgment. At the of the day, this contest is only for fun. So live and let live. Let some one have it, even though you think they do not deserve. The true beauty will always stay.
MY OPINION ONLY

there are two kinds of criticism the destructive and correctly you say constructive...if you consider yourself an artists ... you wouldn't be bothered in any of this criticisms. We have to know the positive and the negative in what we do. I too, was criticized destructively but I took it openly because I want to be good in what I do, especially in what we all love most "photography". If you read again my previous comment I didn't say anything bad about you or your image, in fact I think its a "NICE IMAGE"...good luck..

No one who truly appreciates the way childhood flies by in the wink of an eye can possibly fail to recognize the speed demon in this angelic photo. Beautiful photo and wonderful interpretation of the theme!
Love it
