I am considering getting myself a brand spankin´new compact camera, but am confused about which one to get. I have been looking at two different ones: The one that I want the most is the Leica D-Lux 3, which is mostly because of its brand (and for posh), and the other one I´ve been looking at is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2. They are both priced within the same range. I´ve been told that the Leica manual settings are tricky to work out, but still its the one that I desire the most. Can anyone please order me to get the Panasonic and tell me why I should do so:unsure:.
RE: What compact camera should I get?
Well, apparently the two cameras you mention here are essentially the same camera, in slightly different bodies, and a result of a collaboration between the two manufacturers. The image processing is still different in the two models, even if the hardware is identically, so presumably the resulting images will be slightly different, at least with the default settings.
I haven't seen any details on the exact nature of this difference, if it is the amount of sharpening, the saturation/colour balance or both.
One thing to bear in mind is that these cameras use an unusual, 16:9 'widescreen' sensor format, so I guess it depends on your preferences if this is more suitable than the classic 4:3 format. I think you can choose between 3 size ratios for saving images: 16:9, 4:3 and 3:2.

RE: What compact camera should I get?
Panasonic cameras have a reputation for being noisy even at low ISO settings, so consider that. I have used the Canon Powershot A95 and now the A640 for almost two years, and have been very satisfied, especially with the new A640. Take a look at it on dpreview.

What are you intending to use it for? (Horses for courses, and all that)

RE: What compact camera should I get?
Thank you all for replies!
Ideally I´d like a SLR, but they are expensive and big. Having in mind that I´ve got two kids with me most of the time, I need a camera that I can bring with me almost everywhere I go, and can stand up to some fiddleing from the hands of a nosey two year old. I may take pictures of horses for courses, the odd snap and would like it to be good enough for taking basic stock shots. I know that this is asking alot from a restricted compact, but I´ll have a go.

If you are unsure about which product is best check read expert reviews. Using PriceGrabber.com (http://www.pricegrabber.com/info_expertreviews.php/masterid=22720937) I came across a cool site that list all expert reviews for a product in a single page. I hope this helps: http://www.smartratings.com/photography/digital_cameras.
