Attention: New Forum in Progress

Unfortunately, our current forum software is causing us some problems, so we have decided to turn off the posting capabilities - for now. We decided to develop our very own forum to get it just right - and it will be up and running again towards the end of May.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Until the new forum is available, you can still browse and read the old forums, but unfortunately not post new messages.

Thank you so much for your patience!

Image size and other concerns
Posted in Newbies on 20. August 2007 by akarelias

I am relatively new to CreStock but I am working with 14 other stock agencies in the last year, so I have accumulated wuite a lot of experience in this area.

95% of my images submitted here in CreStock have been downsized to the S dimensions. I read somewhere else that this is done in order for the agency to keep the files and not reject them. This is fair enough, but I wish that someone could tell me what was actually wrong with the files in the firts place that triggered the downsizing.

Although I do not question the reviewer's judgement with some of the files, with some others I think that the downsizing was totally unecessary. I have to say that I do not sharpen at all my submitted images (except some old ones) because some agencies do not like any sharpenning at all, and in the end it is best to leave the designer do his/her own sharpenning according to their wishes. If this is a reason for downsizing my images (because they appear more blurry due to the lack of sharpennning) then someone should say it.

I am shooting with a Nikon D2X or a Nikon D2Xs (12MP) and do not know what I could have done better to avoid the downsizing. I am always using a tripod, a cable release and mirror lockup in most images. However, I am doing almost all of my work outside (as I am coincentrating in travel and landscape photography) where the ideal conditions of a studio do not prevail.

I have the impression that reviewers are trying to play it safe and downsize anyway. The problem is that this is limiting our sales and rrevenue potential here.

I would appreciate if someone could provide some answers.

Best regards

RE: Image size and other concerns
Mr. Karelias,

First of all, welcome to Crestock and congratulations on your pictures, some of them are great and have received high ratings.

Unfortunately, the resizing issue is a little difficult to look into as once a picture becomes resized it stays resized. I can't say for sure the reasons why your submissions were resized. Resizing is something we really promote to our inspectors as it allows a lot of deserving pictures to make it through. However, I do share your concerns that it may become too much of a luxury to our inspectors, and may get over-used.

Submissions where over-sharpening is obvious will get resized or in the absolute worst case, rejected. Perhaps a little sharpening could help, but it is difficult to achieve a balance there.

We look forward to your future submissions, and we will address your concerns with any new uploads you have.

Best Regards,

Josh Hodge
