Canon lens advice
Posted in Digital Photography on 26. October 2007 by joshDK

Hey guys,

Has anyone had any experiences with either the EF17-40mm f/4L USM or EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lenses from Canon?? Theres also a pretty big price difference, whats the difference in wide-angle and sharpness?

I want some super wide angle, and don't need any zoom as such... any other recommendations? Its doesn't need to cost, just needs to be wide and sharp and... good.

Thanks in advance,

josh

RE: Canon lens advice
The price difference between the two lenses you mention is basically the f-stop.

The 17-40mm is f/4, which is ok, but won't work unless there is good lighting conditions.

The 16-35mm is f/2.8 which is very good, and will let you take sharper, more detailed pictures in situations with low light, i.e. indoors.

At the short end of the mm's, the 1mm difference between 17mm and 16mm is quite noticeable, but that's not what will tip you over.

Unless you are a professional photographer with special need for a low-light lens like the 16-35mm f/2.8, save your money and go for the 17-40mm f/4.

Also worth considering is if your camera has a crop factor. Unless you have the 5D or 1Ds-series, you will have to include a crop factor (1.3 for the 1D-series, and 1.6 for other cameras). In effect you can multiply the crop-factor to the mm of the lens. Hence, for a 1.6-camera (400D, 40D etc.) a 16-35mm lens equals 25-56mm, and the 17-40mm equals 27-64mm. So, if you really want a wide angle zoom lens, you should consider the Sigma 10-20mm, or even the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3,5-5,6.

Thanks guys,

I'll look into getting a fisheye lens possibly in the future. Though due to the crop factor (1.6) using my 40d, I decided on a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM. The lens is designed for non-full frame cameras, so there's no cropping on it. Its a surprisingly sharp lens, and the wide angle is wide, to say the least.

Thanks again,

Josh

I've been reading both mixed reviews about the new Canon 16-35, I'm on the fence about this one until I do some more research.
