Canon lenses... Help! :)
Posted in Digital Photography on 3. November 2007 by pdropinto

Hi!

I have a Tamron 18-200mm. Now I want to buy a new one and I don't know what to buy. Thinking on stock photography which one of these I should buy? - Canon 70-200 f/4 L or Canon 17-40mm f4 ??

Thanks

RE: Canon lenses... Help! :)

pdropinto,

I'm the proud owner of an EF 70-200mm f/4L USM IS. Its one seriously sharp piece of glass, that will produce some great stock images when used in the right way. I imagine its a very different lens to the other one you mentioned however. There is a fair bit of zoom on the 70-200mm, especially when used with my 40d which is not possessing a full-frame sensor. So, that means a metre or two of extra studio space...

Good luck!

Hi,
I have both of these lenses. Usually I´d say for Stock you´d rather want the 70-200 (which is clearly the better lens over all - canon unfortunately hasn´t built a good wideangle yet), because for good selling stock images you won´t need the wideangle too often - landscapes don´t sell too well and for most other things the tele lens is better.

But there are also other choices inbetween. 70-200 isn´t what you would call a walk around lens.

New to Grestock but on 4 other stock sites....
Presently have a Canon 20D with a 50mm f/1.4 & a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens....
Just ordered a Canon 40D (will sell my Canon 20D in a few weeks)....
Also just bought a Canon 17-40mm f/4L zoom lens ... :)

Love to do the Macro shots, wonder how well they sell on this site??
Later

I had the 70-200 for a few months now. It is a great lens for the price. I would have like the IS but wuold have only used it at my daughters Basketball Games. Otherwise it spends most of the time on the tripod. I did use it hand held for some senior pics outdoors(forgot the tripod), and I was still able to get excellent pics shooting hand held at f4. Some are here. I like the feel of it also. Well balanced. Have fun with the new stuff.

I've been using a 28-90 on my canon rebel, and i love it. decent amount of zoom, good close ups, and convenient to use on the go.

I hope there's a good reason for choosing the f4 version rather than the f2.8 IS ... other than price of course :)

That is actually the next purchase for me, that's why I ask...
