Attention: New Forum in Progress

Unfortunately, our current forum software is causing us some problems, so we have decided to turn off the posting capabilities - for now. We decided to develop our very own forum to get it just right - and it will be up and running again towards the end of May.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Until the new forum is available, you can still browse and read the old forums, but unfortunately not post new messages.

Thank you so much for your patience!

Removing skies in Photoshop
Posted in Photoshop on 3. November 2007 by dunthorne

Hi all

I need some help removing burnt out sky etc.. I want to replace it with other skies. Ive read several articles on how but im not having any joy. eg: im selecting the sky with the magic wand and hitting delete but nothing is happening. Any ideas or articles would be highly appreciated. Many Thanks and happy shooting :)

RE: Removing skies in Photoshop
Dont select & delete: create a layer mask. select the layer mask, make your selection and then use the gradient tool to blend in the layer. You can then place your sky below and it will show through the layer mask !

Something that is really important on this ... edit at 100% zoom (especially if you are using the quick magic wand route) .. Remember all images are inspected at 100% so if you don't take the time to remove/replace a portion of the image it's going to stick out like a sore thumb when being inspected and end up rejected. Also try to avoid hard contrasting lines between areas ... It all depends on the tool and method you use ... If you are using an eraser make sure it does not have a 100% hardness setting .. if you are deleting through selections make sure that you feather it first. It will make a huge difference in the quality of your image.
