In one corner of the web I've kept hearing that Alien Bees are the best (atm at least). In another corner, they not only haven't heard of them, but seem unconcerned with brands all together. Japan, where I live, don't have Alien Bees, but Comet and some other brand. What have you found to be the best for you? I'm especially interested in umbrellas, softboxes, and either monoblock or (the other... name eludes me).

I think some of the "name brands", you are exactly paying for the name.. although Alien bee comes in pink. LOL I want one. We have studio lights called photogenic and they do a great job. I got my softbox off ebay that fits right onto it.

I use Norman, old stuff, but since I have 6 lights, and 3 powerpacks, it make no sense to change for some new fangled light like Aliens, Photogenics or anything else. My Normas do the job, are 2000w/s each, and the powerpacks run from 1250 to 4000w/s. More than enough for any studio needs. Only down side they do not have the 'dial your' level' ability of the Aliens , Photogenics or newer gear, a very minor problem, which is easily fixed if you have the studio room:)

I use Profoto (2xCompact 600 and 1xCompact 300 with variable softbox setups) and Multiblitz 4xProfilux 400 with 90x120cm softboxes. I could say Profoto is more accurate and reliable paraflash system then any other paraflash system on the market. Profoto is guarantee same light power and light temperature in any shots with fast recycling time. I think it's very important in serious studio works. But Profoto is little bit expensive. If you have some budget concerns I can recommend you Photoflex' First Studio or Lastolite' Lumen8 Sets. They are very affordable.
