Why the leap in quality between todays best and todays worst is so small?

I have to agree with the judge again! I won't even go into why this image is a 'no seller' but for individuals to say 'there is a fine line between the worst and the best today' and 'I prefer the worst image' is just being negative for the sake of being so. This image may sell once or even twice but that would probably be via subscription just to be stored on some hard drive with the intension of using it for a brief that it may possibly work in in the future, or it could sell if a designer wished to cut the orange out digitally for another use. It would be a waist of the time adding this to Crestock.

@YamatoHD - if you think this is a salable stock image, you need to pack your things up and go do something else, or take a time-out from the anger and learn about stock photography. Seriously.
