Halloween Photoshop Contest: Winners + Top 50 Gallery

Posted Thursday, 6 November 2008 in Photoshop
The 'Halloween Horrors' Contest Round is over, and we can present an impressive gallery of spooky, freaky and downright disconcerting imagery. We're also happy to reveal who walks away with a MacBook for their efforts!

1st Place: Winner of an Apple MacBook!

1. Z144man   [view fullsize image]

The judges had a pretty tough task identifying the best of the best among the abundance of high quality entries in this round. The number of entries depicting the girl with a lantern in varying degrees of zombification was perhaps a little excessive, making the competition even stiffer if this was the main subject of your design.

The brief was pretty simple; make us afraid, very afraid. Consequently many of the top entries are those that have managed to capture a spooky atmosphere convincingly, while a number of extremely intricate designs are perhaps further down on the shortlist than what you might expect.

There are some pretty dark entries here – in terms of subject matter obviously, but also quite literally dark – so if you think you must be missing something, try cranking up your monitor brightness.

the judges seem to go for cliche (though well executed) concepts
Congrats!

polluks should have won with his pumpkin design, by far most creative and best execution. did u jsut pick this crap design coz its easier to ship the prize to an american entrant?
To Iceman

Dont see how you can call it Crap, very ignorant of you. Different people, different tastes...Deal with it.
By ultradialectics on Thursday, 6 November 2008 7:03 PM
i am confused, so you guys are telling me that all the images
used for instant in the top designs do not have copyright on them?
i dont buy that.
By kokeshi_design on Thursday, 6 November 2008 7:11 PM

There are plenty of websites dedicated to free images, but that's me on the horse.
By tbbjr on Thursday, 6 November 2008 10:37 PM
Congratulations Z144man on winning the MacBook. I must say the judges seem to have missed the mark on this one though. Differences in taste is no excuse for not being able to determine quality of work.
Disappointed!
By lamaksstalk on Thursday, 6 November 2008 11:56 PM
not happy with the judging.... First prize winning entry is awesome i admit, and few others but.. even the entries that don't scare you were honored. (The theme being Scare us)
People get away using external images and 3D sources.. they might not be copyrighted, but the challenge should be, what you can do just using the source images.
this contest doesn't seem to be a "photoshopping" skill contest... its about personal tastes of the judges...
Congratulation.

Good work, congratulation for the first winner and the finalist.....and rest other entries,..... though you didnt win this round....you guys still make amazing work , definetely, personally i was suprised with your skill working out with the images. thumbs up guy, keep up the good work on the next round.
By ultradialectics on Friday, 7 November 2008 5:52 PM
well i think it is just about using any image you can find on the
net and put it in your design. I dont know why they put in their rules
"dont use copyright material" cause everybody is doing it.
By lamaksstalk on Monday, 10 November 2008 6:10 AM
Please let me know if this contest is about Photoshopping skills or Concept behind the work?
why provide source images, if u can win using external images??
photoshop skils ????
By ane on Monday, 10 November 2008 7:15 AM
lamaksstalk I'm agree with you, this contest it's for creativity not for photoshop skills. I really want to know what it's the first rule for this contest.
It's ok the image for the winner but it's not a scary one and not a skil top...there are a lot of images not emntioned in this round; this is art...it's about what de judges likes

ane: "...not a skil top..."
By Z144man on Monday, 10 November 2008 5:25 PM
what could have been improved as far as PS skills go?
You picked the right winner
By Kerblotto on Thursday, 13 November 2008 1:34 PM
